Looking for a job these days requires that you not only have the right skills and experience to offer but also have the ability to properly market yourself to potential employers. What would make you successful few decades ago may not be sufficient in today's job market. This gap between job hunting before and today is well addressed in the newest book of Jay Block, 5 Steps to Rapid Employment.

Jay is an industry pioneer and one of America's leading motivational career and empowerment coaches. He indeed truly lived up to become a great talent in his field. The book tells us how he went from totally unaware of his career path when he was only 39 years old to a living authority in helping job seekers find their direction.

Before I read the book, I had an expectation that he will discuss first and foremost about how to prepare one's resume, then followed by interview techniques. However I was wrong. He did even better than that when he started discussing about changing our thinking. He stated that job seeker should look at his activity of looking for a job not as a job search but instead as a job campaign. You will understand what he means when you read his book.

Moreover, he addresses how to address the emotional roller coaster of being unemployed or unhappy with a job. He will help you right at the start how to manage fear and negative emotion while in this situation. Jay spoke from his experience so you can feel
that he really understood the situation of the most likely readers of this book.

For me the most important part of this book is when he ask the readers to define their goals. He started asking readers to define their life values then followed by career values. It really made such a lot of sense to do it this way since one has to find his unique values before embarking in a career journey. One who does otherwise will find himself either unhappy with his current job or always ending up finding a lot of difficulty looking for one.

I really recommend this book not only for job seekers but also for those who are happily employed. The principles that Jay teaches can be applied not only in job campaign but also in setting personal and team goals. The lessons can be used by anyone who has a relentless pursuit of his passion.

I would say that this book gives me a lot of insights too since I am also in a current job campaign.

I suggest that one should strongly apply the knowledge this book has to offer. It will not only teach you skills but also wisdom about life.
